Ling Ling Chang sworn in to replace Josh Newman as state senator

This afternoon the Associated Press posted this brief news item:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Republican Ling Ling Chang has taken the oath of office to replace a California Democratic senator who lost his seat in a recall election earlier this month.

Chang, of Diamond Bar, replaced Josh Newman of Fullerton on Monday.

Newman defeated Chang in the 2016 election in a district that had historically elected Republicans, giving Democrats a supermajority to raise taxes or suspend legislative rules without any Republican support.

He was targeted for a recall after voting to increase gas taxes and vehicle registration fees as the GOP looked to end the Democratic supermajority.

Chang served one term in the state Assembly and was previously a member of the Diamond Bar city council.
